WNR - Vertical spread (Bull call)

4/26/11

WNR sold off hard today for no real reason. Took this chance to open a vertical using DITM call.
WBT BOT +1 VERTICAL WNR 100 MAY 11 15/21 CALL @2.80
Break-even is 17.8.
The delta of this vertical is .69. So every dollar increase in WNR should give me $69.
Note: May 5 is the date for earnings release.

4/27/11
WNR is taken to the woodshed today.
21 strike call is trading for .05. Closed it for .05. My broker charges no commision on options trading for <= $.05.
So only the Long call is left(15MAY11 call). Will sell another call when WNR rebounds into earnings.

5/09/11
Now that the MAY11 15 call is breakeven, should I be selling a MAY11 18 call or another MAY call to make it a vertical spread??. just leave it as a straight call??
Great comeback for WNR. The crack spreads are awesome(~$34) and the refiners should make plenty of money.

7/14/2011
WBT SOLD -1 VERTICAL WNR 100 JAN 12 20/25 CALL @1.77 ISE ($3.00) $177.00

Profit: $110
Still have the covered call position(with SEP18C).

Banked profits today

Cashing in on Covered Calls. Investing with Stock OptionsSold half quantity in number of positions today. Had to bank profit. If the market goes up, I still make profit.
If the market goes down, I can claim a moral/monetory victory. ;)
Last year too, I banked profit. But the market ended up going. Lets see what happens this time around.

Sold full position of TIE and FUR. Both did nothing since I bought.

WNR - covered call

Bought a covered call on WNR. In the morning WNR went down quite a bit(< 17).
The APR18C which will expire in few days went down quite a bit too.
I used this call to buy the covered call. The call portion of it, I got it for $.12.

It did not reduce my cost much, but immediately and hopefully paid my commisions on this trade.
If this call expires I will sell MAY18C on Monday. I think the APR18C will expire.

If WNR shoots past 18 and I get called I will make $85. Lets see.

WBT BOT +1 COVERED WNR 100 APR 11 18 CALL/WNR @17.14 ISE
Commision: $5.00
Cost: $1,714.00

The whole theory behind this trade is the crack spreads. They are very high right now. This is when refiners make most money. WNR is a very good long trade for the next two months.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/quote?ticker=CRK321M1:IND

4/19/11
Unfortunately WNR was getting called away. So closed the position manually. With my broker, if a CC is called, the commision is steep($15).
WBT SOLD -1 COVERED WNR 100 APR 11 18 CALL/WNR @17.98 ISE
After commisions made $74. Not bad for a position held for less than a week.

Opened another CC position on WNR on 4/18/11.
WBT BOT +1 COVERED WNR 100 MAY 11 18 CALL/WNR @16.35 ISE
Cost: $1,635.00
Commision: $5
Should have gone for May19 call. But always looking to reduce my cost basis and do CC with ITM options.
If called, I will make a tidy profit for month hold. If call expires, I make $111.

05/04/11
Bought back the MAY11 18 call for 0.05. Looking for a spike in WNR to sell another 18 call(maybe MAY or JUNE).

05/09/11
5/9/11 WBT SOLD -1 WNR 100 MAY 11 18 CALL @.25 CBOE -1.5 25.00

     Expired.

05/23/11
WBT SELL -1 WNR 100 SEP 11 18 CALL @1.10 LMT GTC CBOE
9/19/2011

WBT SOLD -1 WNR 100 OCT 11 16 CALL @1.40 CBOE ($1.50) $140.00

Sold another call. Effectively long 100 shares of WNR at 13.6. with no upside after 16.
9/19: I think WNR will be in sideways action for sometime to come. This is the reason for selling 16C instead of 18C.

XNPT - CoveredCall position

Now that the drug is approved, there will be more upside. There are sizeable milestone payments due. Based on the reports/messages it is valued somewhere around 23.
But I think it may not see $23 very soon. It may take some time. The approved drug will be sold only from June.
 http://www.beaconequity.com/xnpt-on-fire-xenoport-is-back-on-the-wave-of-horizant-approval-2011-04-07/#ixzz1IqdYdZUb

Initiated a covered call position.
WBT BOT +1 COVERED XNPT 100 MAY 11 11 CALL/XNPT @9.545 ISE
If this is called, will make $140 after commissions(14% profit). If not called, it will be 7% profit and then I proceed to sell another call.

Calls in MDVN also look interesting. Need more capital for MDVN, so I settled for XNPT.

4/19/11
Bought back the May 11 call for 0.05.  and sold another call.
WBT SOLD -1 XNPT 100 JUN 11 10 CALL @.30 PHLX (commision $1.5)
This will further reduce my cost.

TZA - Covered Call

BOT +1 COVERED TZA 100 MAY 11 34 CALL/TZA @30.60 ISE
Commision:$5.00
Cost : $3,060.00

Covered Call - Updating my approach

I did/doing CoveredCall or CoveredStock using stocks that are below $10. Eventhough I was picking strong stocks and making approximately 10%, the dollar amount was small.
I am not worried about the commisions. TOS commisions are very affordable when compared to other well know brokers.
Now my aim is to get more dollar amount in the option sold (bcos time premium ofcourse). This means I need to look for stocks with higher sticker price. After much thinking and doing a reality check, I came to conclusion that I can afford only stocks < $45.
One stock which I found was TDSC. This is a fundamentally good stock. There is a very good reason it went from 17 to 45. The May 45 options had very good time premium. But by the time I put some time into the DD, it went from 43 to now 55 (in matter of days).
The reason I am looking for stocks between $20 and 45 with above average Imp. Volatality is the Time Premuim portion. example, TDSC ATM strikes has good extrinsic value.
TDSC has now went out of my buy range.
CRR is another one. awesome Extrinsic values for two months ahead options. But well out of my reach.
Looking at MDVN, ASYS. May options and ATM strikes have decent extrinsic value.

Flashed a kernel with OC/UV capability

[Kernel] Tigers Blood v2 Voodoo Lagfix, Sound, Color, BLN, OC/UV
Just flashed this kernel. Will test it out for few days. Already OC'ed it to 1200MHz(1.2 GHz).

Reading lot of things about OC, UV, BLN and uses of modified kernel. There must be some use, if not the devs would not have ventured in developing a kernel with these features.
>> Anyday would prefer the simple Kernel+Voodoo. <<

3/17/11: Dont see great difference in the performace. Sometimes there are sound pops(must be a know bug).

Different backups available for rooted Vibrant (may apply to any Android phone)

1. Nandroid Backup:
The easiest and most reliable way to fully and 100% back up and restore your Android phone.
By fully back up, I don’t mean backing up just your address book or your emails, or your dog. I mean EVERYTHING that resides on your phone with the exception of the SD card – what it will create is essentially a full image of your phone’s current state that you can restore to at any time as if nothing happened. This image will be written to your SD card which you are then free to copy around and back up on your computer.
In fact, the nandroid backup is very similar to imaging your computer hard drive before you swap drives – the principle is the same.

•When you restore from a full image backup, you have to restore all or nothing. In other words, you will
not be able to get back *just* the photos.

How to take this backup: Go into ClockworkMod Recovery. Select the option "backup and restore" and then choose "Backup".  I am running StockKernel+Voodoo and I have redbend CWR recovery.

2. Neldar's SGS Kernel Flasher
It lets you take backups of the current kernel.
How to take this backup:  Use the tool from the Market.

3. Titanium Backup
What can Titanium Backup back up ?
•All the applications you have installed, including protected ones,
•All the data and settings of these applications,
•Most (nearly all) of your phone's settings and data.
•NOTE: It will not backup the system applications from your ROM. Only their settings and data will be
backed up.
How to take this backup:  Use the tool from the Market.

Backups are very important for your rooted phone. I take all three types of backups(I sleep better knowing I can restore my phone if I break it). I do it on a weekly basis or just before I flash a major update.

Covered Calls & Roth IRA

I plan to play with more covered calls using options expiring in two to six months. If executed correctly by picking a safe stock, I should be able to manage to get 4 to 10% on invested money after commissions.

Right now I am doing these covered calls in regular brokerage account. But doing this in regular stock account will make me pay high capital gains(< 1 year holding).
I need to avoid these capital gains. How? Do these covered calls in my regular IRA.
But if I do this in IRA account, I will be paying taxes when its time to withdraw. which is not good too :)
Right now money in this IRA is not much(<12,000). So I made the decision to convert this IRA account to Roth IRA.
I should have done this last year to split taxes into two years but my regular IRA is not much, so nothing is lost I think ;)

****The Roth IRA (Roth Individual Retirement Account) is a powerful, “tax advantaged” investment product. The number one benefit of the Roth IRA is that individuals are able to grow and withdraw their "wealth" tax free. ****

1. If I contribute $5,000 to my Roth IRA this year, am I able to write it off on my income-tax return?
Answer is no.
2. What about commisions I pay to buy/sell stocks in Roth IRA. Can I deduct in taxes.
No. Commissions generated by trades inside a tax-qualified account such as Traditional or Roth IRAs don’t matter. Since you are not tracking capital gains or losses within these accounts there is no deduction for these fees from a tax perspective.
3. Advantages of Roth.

lockscreen fix will only work with DEODEXED rom

====================

Odex vs Deodex

====================

Theres plenty of debate over what is faster/better to use, im not going to take sides in this one. This is just information about what the differences in the two are, try for yourself.

Deodex basically takes the odex file and stuffs it into the apk as a classes.dex. First boot it dissembles the file into /dalvik-cache (i believe). Now there is basically 2 copies of the odex, one in the apk one in cache. This makes it "portable". This allows modders to work on the apks & easily change stuff. If you want themes or stuff like lockscreen fixes you MUST use Deodex.

Odex is how things come stock. It takes up less room but making modifications or taking apks from other roms is hard. You cannot use themes with this version!! To see odex in dcupdater you must go to menu -> configuration -> rom update settings -> display all roms & display experimental roms. Its marked experimental to avoid confusion because themes in dcupdater will not work with it.

Successfully rooted Vibrant 3G on Froyo.UVKA6

Rooted Samsung Vibrant with Froyo KA6
Recovery: ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.2
Radio/Modem: KA6
Kernel: Stock+Voodoo
Mods: Constantly changing. Adding and removing.

All these are from XDA-Developers forum
I am just listing the steps I took to root my phone and post-rooting
You NEED to put your phone on USB Debugging mode

1. on your PC: Download and install Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Web Installer).
2. on your PC: Download and install Samsung USB drivers:

64bit:

32bit:

For Linux and Mac the Android SDK drivers should work fine.

Disclaimer: Please follow this guide at your own risk. No one will be liable if your device gets damaged or bricked during the process but you.

3. I followed the instructions in this URL (using SuperOneClick v1.5):
root-unroot-samsung-galaxy-3-running-android-2-2-froyo (steps 1 to 5 in "To root your phone:" section)
4. Installed EasyInstaller from Market. Used this app to install BusyBox. You can uninstall EasyInstaller at the end of this excercise.

=== After rooting using SuperOneClick (Froyo.KA6 Vibrant), I installed Titanium Backup. I uninstalled apps like Slacker radio, Kindle, TeleNav etc using Titanium Backup app.  If any folders or updates(like Amazon Kindle under MyApps in Market) left, I delete/uninstall them too(but no hurry in reality as the app is already removed). ===

From here read and re-read thoroughly

Once rooted, need to install lagfix. OneClickLagFix
5. I followed the instructions from step 4 to step 9 in
Full Steps to Acheive Root + ClockwordMod Recovery with new KA6 2.2
5a. recovery 3e modified to work like recovery 2e (download 3e_recovery_installer.zip only). This link is only to get the .zip file.

Note: CWR's update.zip will in /. Once I booted into CWR few times and done with my work, I moved update.zip into ClockWorkMod folder.

6. Now installed the lagfix. [KERNEL] stock+Voodoo stable 5.x for Vibrant.
Once Voodoo is installed, when you reboot into recovery the phone boots into CWR(red) automatically. Doesn't need CWR's update.zip in root folder(/).
Tip: Install Voodoo Toggle Reboot Button app from Market. Even easy to enable/disable voodoo lagfix. Made life easier.
Tip: Install Voodoo Control from Market. The status should read: "Ext4 lagfix active". In the Lagfix preferences, I checked the following: "Ext4 conversion" & "Ext4 /system".
In-progress: I am still reading and re-reading to replace the stock kernel. Some phones are not responding well to non-stock kernels. be-aware. If you are planning to move from stock kernel, plan to take a kernel backup (see link below "Info on Backups).

Now the Vibrant.Froyo.KA6 is rooted with lagfix. Enjoy your freedom.
===============================================
>> Info on Backups <<

>> when you boot a phone, either it goes to stock OS(android) or recovery mode or download mode.
>> ClockWorkMod recovery tool is better than the standard recovery tool.
>> ClockworkMod Recovery --- a tool to flash (from inside the ROM manager, when selected, it will reboot the phone in recovery mode. then we can select to install new mods/roms/themes,modems).
>> I am using Voodoo Toggle Reboot Button app to reboot into recovery instead of ROM manager.
>> Deodexed (reverse of Dalvik Executable (.dex) format)
>> a .tar file (Odin/Heimdall flashables)
>> a .zip file (ClockworkMod recovery flashable)

How I moved contacts

I moved from HTC Touch Diamond for Sprint phone to Samsung Vibrant on T-Mobile. The person at the T-Mobile store was not able to move contacts. So the burden to move contacts from Touch Diamond to Vibrant fell on me.

I will mention the steps I took to make this move.

1. HTC Touch Diamond is a Windows Mobile based device. The file pim.vol is the file containing the contacts.

Copying the pim.vol to a PC and opening it is not possible.

2. Download onto your TouchDiamond a freeware tool: PIM Backup (http://www.dotfred.net/) . Unzip and run the exe file.

3. Once you start the PIM Backup tool, choose Backup and then check Contacts(we are looking for contacts only). Click Next.

4. In the next screen, select a name for the backup file name and also for the folder by clicking Browse button. Make sure to uncheck Binary backup if it is already checked. Then click Next.

5. There will be series of messages. The last message should read "Backup task ended in ....". Then click Exit.

4. Go to the folder which you chose and locate the file.

6. Connect the phone to the PC. Navigate to the folder where the backup file exists(.pib file). Copy this file to a folder onto your PC.

7. This .pib file is a compressed file. Use Winrar or winzip to open the .pib file. It will contain contacts.csc. Extract it.

8. Rename contacts.csc to contacts.csv.

9. You can open this csv file using Openoffice or Excel program to modify.
Then use the import option in gmail to import the contacts.

10. You would have setup or linked a gmail account on the Vibrant. Go to Accounts and Sync app. In the Manage accounts locate the gmail account and open it. Click Sync Contacts.

11. Your contacts should show up in the Contacts.

Enjoy!
